Turning Waste into Value: What Are the Various Uses for Waste Tires?

May 11, 2026

Most waste tires are not severely worn and can be reused by being retreaded into new tires. Alternatively, they can be reprocessed into rubber powder and granules for use in modified asphalt, waterproofing materials, rubber floor tiles, or rubber running tracks. Most importantly, they can also undergo thermal pyrolysis to yield high-economic-value products such as tire oil, carbon black, and steel wire.

After collection, the steel beads are extracted from the waste tires, which are then reprocessed-using a mechanical-physical shredding process-into rubber powder and granules of various specifications. Following a desulfurization process, the rubber powder can be converted into reclaimed rubber for the production of sheet materials-such as cushioning pads, mudguards, and sound-absorbing materials. It can also be utilized in modified asphalt; when added to base asphalt as a modifier, it extends pavement service life, reduces noise, and mitigates vibration. Furthermore, it is employed in the manufacture of waterproofing materials-such as waterproofing membranes and coatings-and can be used to construct synthetic sports fields, running tracks, and similar facilities.
